Why do you want to serve on the UAPCS Board?
During my five years of service on the board at Summit Academy, including three as board chair, I’ve come to rely on UAPCS as a trusted leader in Utah’s charter movement. UAPCS has been instrumental in supporting our schools, advocating for our interests, and providing the resources and collaboration we need to succeed.
What specific skills and knowledge can you bring to the board?
I bring to UAPCS a combination of governance experience, strategic vision, and a deep commitment to the charter movement. Over the past five years on the Summit Academy board, including three as chair, I’ve gained firsthand knowledge of board governance, finance, policy, and compliance, as well as the importance of leading with a clear mission. My background in business and marketing allows me to see how charters can differentiate themselves and innovate in ways that keep education relevant and practical. I’ve worked with administrators, legislators, teachers, and families to build consensus, advocate for autonomy, and move organizations forward. Through years of leadership and coaching, I’ve also developed strong communication skills that enable me to articulate complex issues, inspire others, and foster buy-in. At the core of all of this is a commitment to students and families, ensuring that charter schools remain a place of choice, opportunity, and innovation for Utah communities.
Please share your prior governing board experience.
I joined the Summit Academy Board in 2020 and have assisted in navigating the LEA through several significant changes, including serving as Board Chair for three years. This role involved personally recruiting and hiring Dr. Molly Hart as our Executive Director, as well as working closely with her during her tenure as our most senior leader. I've chaired the Development Committee and served on the Finance, Academic, and Governance Committees, leading the creation of new strategic directions and initiatives delivered to the LEA. I've created and led board retreats to determine strategic vision, and align our multiple campus school into the leading school in this area.
Where do you hope to see the Charter School movement in the next five years?
Over the next five years, the charter movement must boldly lean into innovation to remain strong and relevant. Families will continue to seek schools that offer choice, flexibility, and personalized learning, and charters are uniquely positioned to meet these needs. We can no longer afford to, by default, allow our schools to model traditional districts; instead, we need to pioneer new approaches that reflect the realities of today’s students... especially when that means integrating AI and digital learning, building stronger workforce pathways, or creating whole-child models that address both academic and personal growth.
